The Bear Glacier

On our way back from viewing the Salmon glacier, we stopped and took pictures of a second glacier, named the Bear glacier.  What a beautiful blue we could see in it.  The light was just right and the reflection of the glacier onto the lake by the same name was so neat.  The water from the melting glaciers is dirty-looking because of all the silt the glacier grinds as it moves and melts.

On our way to Dease Lake in British Columbia on Friday, June 29, we climbed back up the coastal mountains away from Hyder and back on the Cassiar Highway.  We finally saw our first (hopefully not our only) bear!!!!  Our huge caravan of 20 rigs didn’t faze him.  He was grazing on grasses and flowers right by the side of the road.  We think he was a young bear because he wasn’t very big.

The mountains up on the Cassiar Highway were absolute giants.  We haven’t seen mountains this big since we visited the Aps.  They just boggle our minds.  The “fireweed” that grows along the highway edges is the most beautiful magenta color.  We didn’t get any pictures because we couldn’t stop.IMG_5245IMG_5269IMG_5268IMG_5261IMG_5259IMG_5247

We all enjoyed the sunshine as we had been on the coast where it rains practically all the time.  We never got to really see the mountain tops while in Hyder.  We stayed in Dease Lake, B.C. on Friday nite, June 29.  On to Watson Lake, Yukon, Northwest Territories, the Yukon Gateway,  where we had a nice grocery store (a real treat), a film on the Northern Lights and the world famous Sign Post Forest.  We (I) went nuts over all the signs that people have nailed up over so many years.  An Army engineer, who was in the area in l942 working on the AlCan Highway and was so homesick, painted a sign with his hometown name on it and nailed it to a tree so he wouldn’t feel so far from home.  People have kept this practice up until I don’t think they really know how many signs are there.  In 2008, they estimated 65,000 signs.  Through the years, the town has put up 4X4 posts for people to attach their signs to.  Each year, between 2500 and 4000 new signs are being added to the collection.   I had signs made for Connie and myself and we thought it was so neat to add ours.

One of the real mysteries is a 6’ X 10’ sign from the German autobahn.  How did they ever get it here?  I found a sign from the owners of Frehner Construction in Las Vegas.  Kelly and I knew him years ago.  Connie and I found a sign put up by one of our RV Freewheelers.

Connie’s lesson for the day: When you go to a Sunday Prayer Meeting, be sure the legs on your folding chair are locked in place.  Sorry folks, no picture of that one.

We’ll check back next time we have internet service.  Hope everyone is well.
